With Halloween just around, we did a little digging for you guys. We present you 10 Horror Films Inspired By Real Life Events.

10.Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre  is an American horror film from the year 1974, directed by Tobe Hooper. The plot follows a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals. The character of Leatherface and minor plot details in film were inspired by the crimes of real-life murderer Ed Gein. It is still considered as one of the greatest and most controversial of horror films.

9.The Exorcist (1973)

The Exorcist is an American horror film, based on the novel The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. It was released in 1973. Exorcist is one of the most successful films of the early 1970s and sparked worldwide discussions. The plot deals with the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl and her mother’s desperate attempts to win back her child through an exorcism conducted by two priests. Aspects of the novel were inspired by an exorcism performed on a young boy by a priest.

8.Chucky – The Killer Doll (1988)

Chucky is a horror/ comedy series, which drew five sequels with since 1988.  The creator of the series is Don Mancini , who wrote all parts of the script and also took over as director, the fifth and sixth part. Chucky’s real name is Charles Lee Ray and is derived from three known murderers. Charles Manson , Lee Harvey Oswald and James Earl Ray. It is believed to be modeled after the true life story of Robert the Doll.

7.Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960)

Psycho is an 1960, American feature film by Alfred Hitchcock. It was nominated for four Oscars and is considered as one of Hitchcock’s major works. The American Film Institute chose Psycho in 2001 to the first rank of the 100 best American thrillers. The scene in which the main female character is stabbed in the shower is considered as best known and most quoted scenes in film history, both visually and musically. Film is based on 1 959 novel of the same name by Robert Bloch and is loosely inspired by the crimes of Wisconsin murderer and grave robber Ed Gein.

6.The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

American thriller is based on Thomas Harris’ 1988 novel of the same name, his second to feature Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer. Hannibal Lecter, is a fictional character in a series of suspense novels by Thomas Harris. This horror film was directed by Jonathan Demme and starred Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. The template for the character of Buffalo Bill applies to the serial killer Ed Gein.

5.The Rite – The Ritual (2011)

The American thriller is based on Matt Baglio’s book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist, based on real events. The film is  directed by Mikael Håfström.

4.The Girl Next Door (2007)

American horror film adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s 1989 novel of the same name. The film is loosely based on true events surrounding the torture and murder of Sylvia Likens by Gertrude Baniszewski. The case is based on a true story; with what happened with the 16-year-old Sylvia Likens. She was tortured by a family in their basement to death.


3.Conjuring – The Visitation (2013)

Conjuring is an American horror film directed by James Wan from the year 2013. The film is about paranormal investigators whose reports inspired the Amityville Horror.

2.The Haunting in Connecticut (2009)

An American horror film directed by Peter Cornwell. The film is alleged to be about Carmen Snedeker and her family. The film is based on the book “In a Dark Place” by Ray Garton.

1.Bela Kiss: Prologue (2013)

Bela Kiss was a Hungarian serial killer ,who is attributed for the murder of at least 23 young women during the beginning of first world war. Bela Kiss: Prologue is a German film, directed by Lucien Förstner.

    very interesting top-10-list. didnt know that Chucky is based by real life events. maybe there is a connection between the alfred hitchcock title “psycho” and the believers in the story of robert the doll haha.
