HOW TO WRITE A COVER LETTER FOR UNIVERSITY ADMISSION APPLICATION PART III

Part I and II here

DIRECT ENTRY METHOD FOR MOTIVATION LETTER INTRO

An alternative introduction to motivation letter would simply omit the summary. Just start directly with your arguments.

FILL THE MAIN PARTS WITH FACTS

The main part takes up the greater portion of the text.  You can describe here:

  • The reason for the choice of Bachelors/Masters

  • The academic focus during the Bachelor and the Bachelor thesis topic (or the contents of the courses you studied in college if they are related to the Masters program)

  • A good explanation of why you want to study the course

  • Your professional goals

You can also quote an example by combining your previous internship with the study program you are seeking admission for. For example,

During my internship at the company XYZ, I acquired a lot of experience in the field of public communication. This led me  to deepen my knowledge about this field. In my opinion, the best way to go about it is through your Master’s program in Public marketing with its focus on Y and Z .

AVOID TYPICAL MOTIVATION LETTER  STATEMENTS

Avoid statements like this:

  • I am excited about your unique program and your university and would be proud and motivated to be able to study with you.

  • The lectures of my Bachelors studies were all very interesting

  • I want to do an Erasmus semester, as international experience is very important for future

  • XYZ (name of city) is a diverse city with many things to do.

Do not use old, cliched and typical arguments. Come up with something like this:

I would like to apply to ABC Masters program due to its diversity of courses and its specialty in the field of management sciences and marketing. I was thrilled by the fact that PQR University was honored by the Excellence Initiative Award (XYZ achievement), which speaks itself for the academic high quality on offer. This made me even more determined to become  a Masters student of PQR University.

Include all these points naturally in the cover letter. There is no one template which fits every application or cover letter. It varies from applicant to applicant and from Masters program to Masters program.

REPAINT YOURSELF AT THE END OF THE MOTIVATION LETTER

Unlike the beginning, writing the end of motivation letter is somewhat easier. Just briefly highlight your motivation again. For example you can write at the end:

I am aware that this Masters program offers a limited number of places. However, I am convinced that my academic qualifications enable me  to meet your high academic standards. It motivates me to make a dedicated contribution to the life and work at the University of XYZ (name of city).

It would be a mistake if you use the above paragraph word by word. As many people are reading this blog and identical formulations can be embarrassing and can bring negative consequences.

If you have a question in your mind about, how to write a cover letter for job, feel free to apply the above-mentioned techniques.
