You would find yourself really lucky if you came across this post before you plan for your visa extension to any of your Auslaenderbehoerde office in your city.

1.Be Prepare To Spend A Night Out

You would be really unlucky if you are living far away from the Auslaenderbehoerde Berlin office in your city. It can be hard to find late night or early morning tube/metro/bus connections.

If you are not living in the vicinity of the Auslaenderbehoerde Berlin, you need to get one night prior, outside the office and stand in the line till next day they open the office, lets say 7 am in the morning, Mondays and Tuesdays.

2.Limited Tokens Available Per Day

The first step is acquiring the token number that would lead to your interview with the visa application officer. According to some officials at Auslaenderbehoerde Berlin office, one must arrive in front of the token counter at least 3-4 hours prior to opening of counter.

The interesting fact is even if you are successful in standing in the waiting line for 2-3 hours, there is no guarantee that you would get the token number. Because each working day, the visa officers entertain a certain number of applicants. The interesting aspect here is that, they never explain how much tokens they are going to issue on a given day.

Don’t worry, you will encounter many students there who have turned out professional in handling these long queues, which would give you their estimates.

3.Take Your Girlfriend With You

You should be having someone with you. Some students make a group of 3-4 and go together.  Honestly, its scary out there. Imagine you live far away from Auslaenderbehoerde Berlin, you know that you have to be at the gate of Auslaenderbehoerde office before they open the token counter. Everyone tries to reach as early as possible. You just have to leave your house lets say 11 pm midnight and take the last connection to Auslaenderbehoerde.

Take a good friend of yours along. If you have a girlfriend dont hesitate to impress her with your adventures of spending out night with her counting stars. She can help you relaxing your nerves and for some moments you would stop cursing German bureaucracy.

There is one more option. You can go on Thursday (token counter opens at 10 am), but if somehow you cannot manage to reach on Thursday , you better take the first option.

4.Never Forget Pakistani Passport Office Line up/Long Waiting Lines

Its not any worse than that. You might have experienced long lines outside Pakistani (respective countries)  passport offices. This would provide you the taste of same food in different packing. The only difference is that you won’t find any stamp farooshs (stamp sellers) here with their tables selling challan (bank receipt) forms.

5.Prepare Your Meal & Take It With You

Of course if you are planning to hit the Auslaenderbehoerde Berlin on Monday or Tuesday, please prepare your food and take it with you. Let’s consider it as a picnic for you. Really you won’t get such opportunities again. Just kidding there would be nothing open at the night and you need to spend at least 7 hours waiting the whole night, so it would be better that you arrive there well prepared.

6.Take Warm Clothes & A Bed Sheet With You

Forget about going for your visa extensions in Winters but even if you plan it in Summer, the nights will be cold. Just go outside the gate spread your bed sheet, sit back and relax. If you are scared of stray street dogs, take a stick with you:)

7.Relax Your Mind & Just Chill-Take Your Laptop,Books Along

When you know that there is no way out, just go there, sit back and relax. Take some of your gadgets along. Enjoy some movies or read some books , yes you may find some light there. Refer to the pictures I have shared.

8.Never Show Up On Wednesday Or Friday

Thursday :10:00 a.m. – 06:00 p.m.

9.Make Sure You Take Along Complete Application Forms

In case you are dropping an application for German work permit, you need to bring along all required documents. If you forget something, then expect delays and back and forth postal correspondence.

10.Dont Forget To Bring Cash For Payment Machine

Dont forget to take your German EC card or cash along. You would have to pay at the moment right after visa officer certifies your application.

Dont get scared, people have done this and they are doing it and they will keep on doing it. I hope these tips would help you when you plan for your next student visa extension.

Very informative article but it’s better to book an appointment 2 months in advance in order to avoid such a hassle !

but how do you know 2 months ago, if you are still in Germany at this time?

Last time I had to extend my visa (I’m a chinese student) I reached Berlin Auslaenderbehoerde at 2 in the morning (as I already did the same like you many times in the past). It was dark, cold and fully scary as a girl being alone outside in the night. But when I reached the gate of Auslaenderbehorde (which was, what a surprise haha, closed) there were already two very friendly students (a very funny guy and a very beautiful little bit asian looking girl) sitting in front of Auslaenderbehoerde, waiting there since two hours (as they told me). So what I actually wanted to say: You are not alone and can take this “adventure” (as you described it in your blogpost) as an opportunity to make very good friends.
